National Review Follows Suit

About as strong a conservative endorsement anyone can get.  It aknowledges weaknesses but goes on to explain how among the available options Mitt is the least imperfect. (to rtwt courtesy Druge: MAG ENDORSES MITT...

Their bottom line:

More than the other primary candidates, Romney has President Bush’s virtues and avoids his flaws. His moral positions, and his instincts on taxes and foreign policy, are the same. But he is less inclined to federal activism, less tolerant of overspending, better able to defend conservative positions in debate, and more likely to demand performance from his subordinates. A winning combination, by our lights. In this most fluid and unpredictable Republican field, we vote for Mitt Romney.

They didn't list another attribute I wrote to the editors of the New Hapshire Union Leader in response to this screed  If GOP Nominates Romney, They'll Lose  by Jane Swift, Romney's predecessor as Governor of MA, a McCain supporter who apparently has no qualms ignoring Reagan's 11th commandment.

My comment, not yet published, was that Romney is the least threatening GOP candidate to moderate fence-sitters in the general election precisely because he won in the bluest of blue states.  No ther candidate offers that distinction and in a close election that could be the difference.  I lived in MA for a bit and believe me, if it comes down to a Mormon Romney and a black Obama, Romney wins.
