On Wisconsin....
Looks as though Wisconsin is comfortable in its followership by jumping on the momentum bandwagons of Obama and McCain. No surprises here. A closer look at the numbers did, however, prove interesting.
First, 2.7 Democrats for every 1 Republican turned out, roughly 1.1 mil. compared to .4 mil. Yikes. Might have been that their contest is closer, might have been discontent among conservatives, might have been a lot of things but if that statistic holds through November Republicans are in for a thrashing of biblical proportion.
Second, a product of the disproportion no doubt, the GOP winner total was only slightly bigger than Obamas winning margin. Not sure that means anything but I just found it interesting.
If nothing else it's nice to hail from the state that plunged the final dagger into the heart of the Clinton campaign, showing while we may tend too liberal but are not completely useless. Helping yank Huckabee off the stage is just a bonus, except he's so blinded by the stage lights he can't find his way out, or won't.
There's no doubt Obama is better at doing what needs to be done to win the primary - - appeal to the leftish party activists. He is not only managing that but also recruiting an amazing amount of new activists. Now the question looms; how, or if, he can tack back toward the center in the general election and appeal to moderates. That depends whether the promise of all that "changeyness" can withstand genuine scrutiny and actual critical thought. Moderates, by definition, are more issue oriented so change for change sake will not be so easily swallowed, or at least one hopes.
Since critical thought is really really hard when your caught up in messianic rapture, and it's not a liberal strong suit to begin with, he should have no trouble maintaining his mesmerized base. But any strategist worth their salt knows you have to dance who brung ya and changing a strategy while you are winning is always a bad idea. So at the Democrat Cafe we can look forward to an all-you-can-eat light summer fare of platitudinal rhetoric, seasoned with a statistic here and a 5-point plan there to give it, you know, just a hint of substance.
