Of Race and Gender II
I had an interesting political discussion recently with a lawyer acquaintance. The only reason I broached the subject was that I knew this individual to be, basically, from my side of the aisle. This person was on the short list for WI Supreme Court when Diane Sykes left for the Appellate Court so any comments taken are with no salt at all.
I was told how they haven't been following it too closely but related that when they were watching one of the Dem debates the couple agreed that it's pretty cool that we will get either a women or a black for President. I agreed that the historic novelty was pretty cool but lamented in no uncertain terms that it has to be either THAT woman or THAT African American.
Even though I grew up in rural white Wisconsin my non-racists credentials are as good as your likely to find in my Demographic. Through choice and circumstance I have lived in interracial neighborhoods my entire adult life, sometimes even in the same building. My attitude on racism is pretty straightforward; basically any person stupid enough to judge an entire race on the actions of a few is a person whose opinions matter nothing at all to me. Put more simply, bigotry = stupidity, and I have damn little tolerance for either.
Problem is both the former and latter, in large if not majority numbers, vote, so we have to work around them.
That being said, why do I hesitate, or feel it necessary to offer disclaimers, when I criticize Senator Changeyface? It's the PC stupid! The race card has been so overplayed for so long you can't utter a truthful statement for fear of it being either accidentally or deliberately misunderstood. Exhibit A: Geraldine Ferraro, truly a pioneering women in politics, hoisted on her own petard for stating the obvious, something to the effect that Obama wouldn't be where he is today if he was white. Stated inartfully perhaps, but what reasonable person with a room temp IQ could take issue with that? Virtually all of Obamas words and platitudes were mouthed ad nauseum by at least 6 other guys during the first part of the primary and now you can't even remember their names. Why? - - Because THEY WERE WHITE!!! Hellllloooooo.
Don't get me wrong. I take a great deal of pleasure in watching Democrats cannibalize each other but there is a more dangerous trend here; straying from the PC narrative is more than political career suicide - - its pernicious tendency to stifle free expression compromises the first amendment for everyone. Somehow in this overly sensitized yet ever coarsening culture, the right of free speech is being trumped by the phantom right of not being offended, all thanks to PC. I can't be the only one questioning the inate contradiction there.
As this progresses, a term I use loosely, I hope more of us can ignore the complexion and genitalia of the candidates and examine actual stances on actual issues. My naive wishful thinking rearing it's cute little head again.
The brightest Republican minds in the world could not have diagrammed a better plan than the corner Democrats painted themselves into by accident, simply by virtue of acting like Democrats. On one hand they have to keep the focus off substantive issues because when they discuss issues they lose. On the other hand, the historic novelty of the frontrunners, i.e. race and gender, is the most obvious diversion, but it happens to be one their PC gospel compels them to pretend is not an issue! Brilliant.
I know it isn't PC to say so but the longer this Democrat circus occupies the center ring the better the old white guy looks.
