What Would Galt Do?

UPDATE: Neo neocon fleshes it out some...
Obama, his task force, and the auto industry: does anyone else find this especially chilling?

in a word? yes

Regarding the recent dismissal/firing of GM CEO I am thinking John Galt would respond somewhere along these lines...

Dear Mr. President,

With all due respect I do not recognize your authority to fire me.  I am unsure as to the quality of your much vaunted education but your assumption that I am somehow in your employ clearly shows you are entitled a refund.

Also, it is apparent that in spite of your vast experience as a community organizer you are not quite up to snuff on how capitalism works.  I am happy to enlighten you on some of the fundamentals.  As CEO of a privately owned enterprise I take my orders from the Board of Directors who answer to the shareholder owners.  The company has operational policies and, despite onerous government regulations and an unsustainable compensation package, we function under those rules as best we can.

You too sir, have an operational rule set.  It's called the constitution.  I kindly request you revisit that document and, for my edification, point to the provision therein that either explains, implies, or provides the authority you assume in determining my employment.  As a former professor of constitutional law you have me at a disadvantage, but we both know no such authority exists.

The board did accept a government loan, but in doing so it did not automatically relinquish all decision-making authority.  Such an authority could only be legitimately recognized through majority ownership which neither you nor the government has. So, arrange a buyout, and we'll talk, and I'll probably walk.

In the meantime there is plenty of long overdue housecleaning in your own shop, where you actually have authority.  No honest analyst can claim the origins of this economic crisis started in the private sector.  My suggestion would be to start with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Departments of Education, Agriculture, HUD and proceed from there.   Nothing shows ones genuine leadership more than a willingness to right his own ship first.

Some personal advice in closing, you would do well to remember that this government, including you, serves at the will of the people - - not the other way around.  I would thank you to mind your place and show some respect to your employers. Your assumption of phantom dictatorial powers is not only outside the scope, but beneath the dignity, of the office you are privileged to occupy.

Cordially,

John Galt
